UK DCTN funds cellulitis priority setting partnership

The UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network has set up a Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) with the support of the James Lind Alliance to find the most important research questions for research on cellulitis.  The partnership includes patients, dermatologists, nurses, GPs, lymphoedema specialists and microbiologists.

The aim of the cellulitis PSP is to identify uncertainties about the treatment and prevention of cellulitis from both patient and clinician perspectives. These uncertainties will then be ranked in order to prioritise the top 10 selected issues for future research.

Cellulitis is an acute, painful and potentially serious infection of the skin. It is very common and is often managed in primary care. However, cellulitis also accounts for around 2-3% of hospital admissions. In 2012, around 50,000 people were admitted to hospital in England as a result of cellulitis.

Cellulitis is a relatively under-researched topic area; however, the number of people affected by cellulitis and the associated complications of cellulitis alone demonstrate the need for further research into the treatment and prevention of this condition.  A public survey will be released soon.  Look out for more news on the Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology website.
